Chapter Four

Knowing he would not get far unarmed, and despite the protests of his battered body, Blackwell started to half-crawl down the rocky trail in search of his lost guns. The revolver he found immediately. It had been hurled against a boulder, and was useless.

He peered into the darkness, looking for the Spencer. In the scant glow of the lightning, he finally found it. It lay in a gully in the bottom of the ravine—it was only about forty yards away, but in his present condition it seemed like miles.

Deciding that there was no sense in lying there thinking about it, he began his descent. It proved a slow, laborious journey, and he frequently fell among the jagged rocks.

After he had managed less than fifteen yards, he heard a sound which chilled his blood. It was a noise with which he was now very familiar—the angry roar of a grizzly bear. It sounded very close. He looked around frantically, but saw nothing. He dragged himself through the sharp stones toward the carbine.

Caleb tried desperately to concentrate only on the task at hand, but images of his family burned into his mind brighter than the flashing lightning bolts. He loosened his knife in its scabbard.

When he was ten yards away from his goal, he heard the roar again. He looked behind him—the new grizzly stood at the top of the ravine. It could have been the first bear's mate, or Blackwell could have stumbled onto a popular grizzly feeding ground. He didn't care why the bear was there, he only wished it would find a reason to leave.

That did not happen. The second grizzly charged as angrily as the first had. It was fifty yards away, but the creature moved almost quicker than Blackwell's eyes could follow.
